Course description and syllabus

What do we mean when we refer to “the unconscious” or “the subconscious”?  This course sets out to explore how psychotherapists of various disciplines (such as psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioural and transpersonal) use and define the terminology of the regions of the mind outside our conscious awareness.  This course will be of interest to trainee and practising counsellors, psychotherapists and hypnotherapists and anyone who has a serious interest in psychology.

A comprehensive additional reading list is provided and also links are given to a number of authoritative websites including links to free downloadable PDFs. Additional optional readings include articles on altered states, shamanic consciousness, the hypnotic state and transpersonal consciousness.

Topics covered:
• What is the unconscious? A historical perspective.
